On April 23 Linden Labs, makers of Second Life, announced that they have proposed and are organizing an official certification system for builders, modelers, and scripters to "benefit Residents, Developers, and anyone who wishes to use Second Life by clearly identifying both key skills and the holders of those skills." Currently, Linden Labs is working with select members of the Second Life community to develop criteria and processes for this certification. They also hope to extend such recognition to other areas such as Avatar Customization, Terrain/Land Editing, and Land/Estate Management. The proposal is not without controversy and it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

In a February 3, 2007 article for Information Week magazine Alice La Plante writes about corporate America’s continued interest in the opportunities afforded in Second Life, however she also details many of the flaws in the approach some of these companies have taken by simply establishing a presence in the Virtual Word then seemingly abandoning it.  Without a long-term plan to maintain, grow and cultivate this foray into the Metaverse, these companies can be missing out on realizing the full potential of what Second Life can offer to their business.
